Excerpt From Huang Yuanxiu’s Wudang Sword Method Essentials: 武當劍法十三勢/Wudang Jian Fa Shisan Shi – Wudang Sword Method’s Thirteen Patterns

In the Wudang Sword Method, the most important set is the Thirteen Patterns. They’re named according to Thirteen Characters, namely /Chou – Draw, /Dai – Drag, /Ti – Lift, /Ge – Block, /Ji – Strike, /Ci – Stab, /Dian – Tap, /Beng – Flick, /Jiao – Stir, /Ya – Depress, /Pi – Chop, /Jie – Intercept, /Xi – Clear. It’s just like Taijiquan’s 掤/Peng, 捋/Lu, 擠/Ji, 按/An, 采/Cai, /挒Lie, 肘/Zhou, 靠/Kao; 前進/Forward Advance, 後退/Backward Retreat, 左顧/Look Left, 右盼/Expect Right, & 中定/Central Stability. In addition, there’s Sword Dancing, which has no fixed patterns. You shouldn’t try to learn it until your Sword Art is pure & subtle. It is impossible to comprehend without receiving Oral Instruction.
